The Art of Dredging

Dredging and shipping

"Towing Manual" by captain Jan Ter Haar

Dutch mariners have deep roots in ocean towing, just read "Hollands Glorie" a novel by Jan De Hartog, and you will find the true genetics of Dutch towing.

The STC-Group in Rotterdam published a new book on ocean towage.

Due to a lack of practical literature on ocean towage for future seamen, at the start of their careers, the STC-Group aproached one of the guest lecturers; captain Jan Ter Haar.

He is highly familiar with towing and salvage operations.

This cooperation resulted in “TowingManual”.

The book first gives a general review, with a thorough intro to oceangoing tugs; propulsion, winches, towing material, etc...  Secondary tasks of tugs, like firefighting and oil-spil-response are also highlighted. All info is given in a fine balance of text and graphics.

Moreover, as a paper exercise, the author details the virtual departure of a tug-and-tow to the high sea in all its stages; first-hand-knowledge-sharing.

Innovations are highlighted in different chapters, not only from an economical point of view but also from a safety perspective. Throughout this book the link with the salvage and offshore world is kept. The emphasis -however- remains on ocean towing.

Being a seaman himself, the author freely vents his opinions regarding the industry, institutions and regulations, as he feels necessary.

The manual is written for students at nautical colleges, but it reaches beyond that; the book has the potential of becoming an industry standard manual.
